The National Weather Service (NWS) issues a very useful product called a Daily Climate Report. This product summarizes the local day's high and low temperature, precipitation, and snowfall. Each NWS office has only a handful of these for their local area and they are primarily Local Climatological Data (LCD) associated with Automated Surface Observation Systems (ASOS).
The IEM processes this product nationwide and has generated a few crude applications displaying this data. These include:
- An Interactive Map of this data,
- A Text Table showing all reports for one day or a year's worth of reports for one station.
- A Geo-JSON Webservice that emits this data and optionally a comma delimited variant.
A nice aspect of this dataset is that it helps to answer the frequent question of snowfall totals and their departure from climatology. Many of these LCD sites have long term snowfall records, which allows for climatological comparison.
As always, let me know what you think of this. Hopefully it is useful.
