Severe Weather + Precip
Posted: 17 Oct 2023 05:30 AM
Today's featured chart looks into the contribution of yearly precipitation total during periods of either a Severe Thunderstorm or Tornado Warning warning for Ames. This is accomplished by accumulating the one minute interval precipitation when such a warning polygon is active for the Ames Airport location. The top left panel shows the absolute accumulation values per year and the bottom left shows the relative percentages each year. The major caveat with this plot is that the one minute interval precipitation dataset is not necessarily complete for each year. The right panel plots the frequency of having a warning at a given minute precipitation accumulation value. The overall percentage is about 5% of total precipitation falling during such warnings. The right panel relationship is interesting and intuitive with increasing rainfall intensity being more likely to be associated with severe weather, but the highest percentage is only near 20%.
