Reaching 70 in November
Posted: 02 Nov 2020 05:34 AM
The weather for the first week of November looks to make up for some rather lousy late October
weather with highs this week in the 60s and even maybe reaching 70 for some in the state. The
featured chart plots box and whisker plots for hourly temperatures on days during November that the
maximum temperature was at least 70 degrees for Des Moines. It is interesting to note that the
distribution of temperatures shown are nearly all above freezing, which is likely a reflection on having
warmer air masses helping to support such temperatures. During earlier months of the fall season
and late spring, the sunshine is able to heat the ground effectively and help drive warmer air
temperatures. This time of year, the solar incidence angle is decreased and days are shorter, so the
sunshine is helping to mix the lower atmosphere and "bring down" warmer temperatures from aloft.
