Inch Plus Rains

Posted: 31 Jul 2023 05:30 AM

The featured chart looks into the monthly partitioning of daily one inch plus precipitation events for Des Moines. On average, the site sees about eight days each year with such a large rainfall total. The distribution of those eight days is shown by the monthly histogram. It is kind of interesting to see the dip in frequency during July. The warmest month of the year tends to struggle the most to generate more widespread rainfall events that can happen during June and August, when air mass contrasts are a bit higher. The more isolated nature of the rainfall events leads to a slightly smaller frequency.
