Iowa Drought Changes

Posted: 16 Aug 2019 05:35 AM

The weekly update to the US Drought Monitor was released yesterday and continued the worsening depiction of drought in the state. The featured chat presents a smoothed analysis of week to week changes in the coverage of drought over the state. The height of the waves is in units of drought category over the areal size of the state. Rephrasing a change of value 1 would indicate the equivalent area of Iowa changed one drought classification. Since there was no analyzed drought in the state until a few weeks ago, the changes this year are all negative. Of interest is the comparison to last year and 2017, both say improvements in drought overage during mid to late August.
