Meteorology and GIS, why the disconnect?

• GIS has traditionally not supported time as a coordinate variable. (2-D or 3-D space)

• COTS GIS has traditionally not run on Linux and viewed as 'Windows only'.

• GIS is a vague term. Meteorologists believe we have been running GIS systems for many years, although they are not traditionally called GIS.

• Most believe “GIS == shapefile”
